Learning at St Michael's

St Michael's Catholic Parish Primary School, Nowra is registered by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and is subject to its curriculum requirements.

NESA sets and monitors quality teaching, learning, assessment and school standards.

It is also responsible for developing Kindergarten to Year 12 syllabuses for NSW schools.

NESA requirements include an educational program based on, and taught in accordance with, the outcomes of NESA syllabuses in the six Learning Areas (LAs).
 

NESA's six Learning Areas are:

Through responding to texts, composing a wide range of texts and through the close study of texts, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in order to:

  • communicate through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing
  • use language to shape and make meaning according to purpose audience and context
  • think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical
  • express themselves and their relationships with others and their world
  • learn and reflect on their learning through their study of English

Mathematics involves the development of students’ thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of Mathematics. 

There are four broad strands in Mathematics. These include:

  • Working Mathematically
    Students develop understanding and fluency in Mathematics through inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning

  • Number and Algebra
    Students develop efficient strategies for numerical calculation, recognise patterns, describe relationships and apply algebraic techniques and generalisation

  • Measurement and Geometry
    Students identify, visualise and quantify measures and the attributes of shapes and objects, and explore measurement concepts and geometric relationships, applying formulas, strategies and geometric reasoning in the solution of problems

  • Statistics and Probability
    Students collect, represent, analyse, interpret and evaluate data, assign and use probabilities, and make sound judgements 

The overall aim of the Science and Technology curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 6 is to:

  • foster each child's sense of wonder and expand their natural curiosity about the world around them in order to develop their understanding of, interest in, and enthusiasm for science and technology
  • develop each child's competence and creativity in applying the processes of Working Scientifically and Working Technologically to appreciate and understand the Natural Environment and Made Environment
  • enhance each child's confidence in making evidence-based decisions about the influences of science and technology in their lives
  • enable every child to confidently respond to needs and opportunities when designing solutions relevant to science and technology in their lives

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) enhances each student’s sense of personal, local community, national and global identity and enables them to participate effectively in maintaining and improving the quality of their society and physical environment.

The four broad strands of HSIE are:

  • Change & Continuity
  • Cultures
  • Environments
  • Social Systems & Structures

The school’s Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) program aims to develop in each student the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to understand, value and lead healthy and fulfilling lives. This program assists in students' development of responsible and productive roles in society. This will be achieved by developing in each student self-esteem, social responsibility and well-being; movement skill and personal fitness; the ability to make informed health and lifestyle decisions.

The three broad strands of PDHPE are:

  • Fundamental Movement & Physical Movement
  • Healthy Choices
  • Self & Relationships

St Michael's has a part-time Physical Education teacher from K-6.

Creative Arts enables students to gain increasing understanding and accomplishment in:

  • Visual Arts
  • Music 
  • Drama
  • Dance

Students develop an appreciation for the meanings and values that each of the art forms offer personally, culturally and as forms of communication.

In addition, at St Michael's a course in Religious Education is taught in theory and practice.

 

The primary (K-6) curriculum is organised into four Stages of learning:

Early Stage 1

Kindergarten

Stage 1

Year 1 and Year 2

Stage 2

Year 3 and Year 4

Stage 3

Year 5 and Year 6

Most students will be working towards the outcomes for their Stage. Some students will be working towards outcomes that are above or below their Stage. The focus is on developing lifelong learners, who are independent and have the ability to work individually and as part of a group.
